Wheelchair Exercise Monitor Senior Design Project

Wheelchair Exercise Monitor (AKA ‘DREAM Project’ )
Disability Rehabilitation and Engineering Access for Minorities (DREAM)
Senior Design Course Project
August 2017 – May 2018

Introduction
This project was part of a research course called Senior Design. I worked with a group comprising of 4 undergraduate electrical engineering students under the direction of faculty member Dr. Deborah Won.

Project Scope
This project was in its second year of development. Most of the app backend framework functionality had been established by a prior team (ie. retrieving data from sensors, loading/saving data to/from AWS server). The project had two main objectives:
1. design and implement a game that incentivizes a workout when playing
2. develop a metric to quantify energy expenditure for real-time graphical output

The project’s team was split into two subteams; one to work on the app development and the other to work on the energy expenditure metric data analysis. My contribution to this project resided on the energy expenditure metric analysis side of the project.

Tasks and Roles
• Collect electromyography and VO2 data from control and spinal-cord injury subjects
• Develop an algorithm to reliably quantify energy expenditure
